Dia contra la violencia hacia las mujeres

This past week, on November 25^th, Nicaragua celebrated the Día Internacional para la Eliminación de la Violencia hacia las Mujeres with marches, radio reports, and other events across the county. El Movimiento Autónomo de Mujeres (MAM), which brings together all the feminists organizations in Nicaragua, led the march in Managua that not only spoke out against violence against women, but also against the recently proposed constitutional reforms.

According to MAM, 69 women have been murdered this year, 40 of whom died in their own homes; however, the official number from the state-run Comisaría de la Mujer, Niñez, y Adolescencia is 53 women from January to September of this year.

The Estelí based radio-station, ABC Stereo, did various reports throughout the day on the topic. (Click here to listen to the special report) One topic was economic violence against women. According to Ley 779 (Ley integral contra la violencia hacia las mujeres): “la Violencia patrimonial y económica es la acción u omisión que implique un daño, pérdida, sustracción, o destrucción de objetos, documentos personales, así como los bienes de una mujer y los recursos propios o compartidos en el ámbito familiar o de pareja.”

However, the report went on to explain that economic violence is not just damaging a woman’s possessions, but also includes controlling financial resources in order to maintain control of the woman, refusing to provide the necessary resources in the home, not acknowledging the economic contribution of women inside the house through domestic chores, and insisting that a woman leaves a current job or doesn’t find a new one.

Estelí recently saw a case of various women and children turned out of their homes and denied the resources that had been shared under years of marriage, a case of economic violence that would not have been as easily recognizable without article 12 of Ley 779.

Occasions such as el día internacional contra la violencia hacia las mujeres are a great opportunity to organize a project in your site to raise awareness about gender issues and encourage action. This could take the form of marchas, ferias, capacitaciones, mural painting, socio-dramas, sports competitions or anything else you can think of!

La violencia de género es una pandemia mundial que trasciende todas las fronteras y afecta a todos los pueblos y las sociedades - independientemente de su etnia, raza, condición socio-económica, o la religión. Uno de cada tres mujeres en todo el mundo sufren algún tipo de violencia de género en su vida… Afecta el desarrollo económico y desgarra el tejido de las sociedades… Tenemos que mejorar nuestros esfuerzos para prevenir y responder a esta crisis. Cuando las mujeres gocen de sus derechos y tengan la oportunidad de continuar su educación, acceso al empleo y  a la participación política, ellas impulsan el progreso social y económico. Se superan a sí mismas, sus familias, las comunidades y sus naciones. Pero para construir este futuro las niñas deben ser capaces de aprender sin miedo y las mujeres deben ser capaces de tomar decisiones sobre sus propias vidas y el futuro de sus familias.
